John Unthank
- Born: 7 Jan 1769
- Marriage: Betty Watson on 3 Sept 1787 in St Bees, Cumberland, England
General Notes:
1802 was living at 76 Newhouses, Whitehaven Was a nailer when he married, but in 1802 was a pick sharpner, earning 8/- a week. From Colin McCourt: Hi Steve I have spent a little time going through the Unthanks today. I am certain that John & Betty lived at number 76 Newhouses. What is interesting is following John's career and place of abode. He is a nailer living at Ginns 1788, still a nailer living Newtown 1789 (Alexanders christening was 1789 not 1798) Newtown and Ginns are in the same area. 1790 he is still a nailer living at Mount Pleasant. This is intersting because I have read that in the 1840's some of these houses had been nail makers houses and were in a terrible state. This was in a report on the health of the town. 1797 he is still living at Mount Pleasant but between 1797 and 1802 he changes occupation and works for Lord Lowther in the coal mines and moves to Newhouses. By 1805 he has moved to the Gins, which agin is in the same area but he is now a sailor. I'll write again soon Colin (filed mis 19)
